About Yasawa Islands
There are about 20 volcanic islands in a chain just off the northwest coast of Viti Levu. The island chain begins about 40 kilometers northwest of Lautoka and stretch for approximately 80 kilometers into the Pacific Ocean. The home of the famous film "The Blue Lagoon" is ideal for the traveller looking for beach accommodation and blue crystal clear water. History of the Yasawa Islands
The Yasawas were first sighted by Captain Bligh (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) in May 1789, though no survey or charts were commenced until some 50 years later. For the most part, the islands were of little interest to European traders or settlers and so they continued to be quite remote and isolated. During the second world war, the US military set up communications posts in the islands. Today, the Yasawas are one of the most popular regions in Fiji for international tourism.
